Third Filipino killed in Israel-Hamas war

Another Filipino has been killed in Israel as it waged war with Hamas militants, raising the number of Filipinos killed in conflict to 3. The fatality was a 49-year-old Filipina caregiver from Negros Occidental. Her family and President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. were aware of her death. The Philippine government is working with the family, the embassy, and Israel for the repatriation of the remains. There are some 30,000 Filipinos in Israel, mostly working as caregivers. Meanwhile, 131 Filipinos remained in Hamas-run Gaza, including 3 tourists. At least 92 Filipinos sought repatriation from the enclave, but none have been repatriated yet due to the blockade. The DFA is working with diplomatic partners to find a solution. Three other Filipinos remained missing nearly a week since the surprise assault by Hamas and Israel's military retaliation. Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega said, "However, it does not mean that there is no hope. Possibly, these 3 will show up."...

Israeli Settlers Kill 2 Palestinians at Funeral in Occupied West Bank

Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank attacked a funeral procession, resulting in the deaths of two Palestinians. The incident occurred in the village of Qusra. The violence comes in the wake of recent terror attacks by Hamas on Israel. Tensions have been rising in the region. As an ambulance was transporting a wounded man and his son away from the initial attack, the settlers opened fire on the vehicle, killing both of them. The settlers also targeted vehicles in the streets of Sawiya and Turmisiyya. The Palestinian Red Crescent aid group reported treating people with severe gunshot wounds in the town of Qabalan. Since Saturday, a total of 610 injuries have been reported in the West Bank, with 21 occurring on Thursday alone. The Palestinian Red Crescent stated that 13 of these injuries were caused by live fire. "This is a heinous crime," said the Palestinian foreign ministry in a statement. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for justice.

In Israel, 'the place where you want your kids to grow up' has suddenly turned into the front line

Be'eri, a beautiful Israeli kibbutz near the Gaza Strip, was once considered an idyllic place to raise children. The fields were green, the sunsets were breathtaking. But now, it has become the front line of conflict. Hamas rockets rain down on the community, leaving devastation in their wake. Lotan Pinyan, a resident, recalls how they used to joke about the rockets being the only downside to their paradise. But now, it's no laughing matter. Early one morning, the alarm sounded, signaling an imminent attack. The Pinyan family and their neighbors were thrust into a nightmare they never imagined. As the sirens blared, the Pinyans and their community were awakened to the sound of terror. The usual "tat - tat - tat" of bombings was replaced by an unrelenting barrage of rockets. Panic spread as messages flooded their WhatsApp group, detailing the presence of terrorists in the kibbutz. Gunshots, voices in Arabic, and pleas for help filled the chat. The game, which was scheduled to take place in Pristina, cannot be played because the Israeli national team is currently not allowed to travel abroad. This decision adds to the fixture backlog in the qualifying group, where Israel is competing with Switzerland and Romania for the top-two spots. Governor Newsom on the Passing of U.S.

Image
Senator Dianne Feinstein "Dianne Feinstein was many things – a powerful, trailblazing U.S. Senator; an early voice for gun control; a leader in times of tragedy and chaos," said Governor Gavin Newsom. "But to me, she was a dear friend, a lifelong mentor, and a role model not only for me, but to my wife and daughters for what a powerful, effective leader looks like." "She was a political giant, whose tenacity was matched by her grace. She broke down barriers and glass ceilings, but never lost her belief in the spirit of political cooperation," Governor Newsom continued. "And she was a fighter — for the city, the state, and the country she loved. Every race she won, she made history, but her story wasn’t just about being the first woman in a particular political office, it was what she did for California, and for America, with that power once she earned it. That’s what she should be remembered for." Governor Newsom expressed his deep sadness at Sen...

Is China downsizing funding into its Belt and Road Initiative in Africa

Image
China has poured billions into Africa's infrastructure through its Belt and Road Initiative. But is it now downsizing its funding? Researchers from the Boston University Global Development Policy Center have tracked a decline in new loan commitments from Chinese entities to African government borrowers. These new loans fell from a peak of $28.5 billion in 2016 to just under $1 billion last year. The researchers suggest that this decline may not just be due to the pandemic, but a broader shift toward fewer large-scale loans. Report author Oyintarelado Moses says, "The Belt and Road Initiative does appear to be in recalibration mode." Debt repayment issues, global economic headwinds, China's own financial woes, and the need to address environmental issues are among the new pressures on China's lending and countries' borrowing. Policymakers will be looking to a major international forum focused on the Belt and Road Initiative next month in Beijing for signs of ...
